Careless Attention grows Mental Hindrances!

careless1.jpg
attention.letters.l.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once said:
When one attends carelessly and irrationally then:
Greed, Lust, and Sense-desire arise, increase, and expand...
Hate, Anger and Ill-will arise, increase, and expand...
Sloth, Lethargy and Laziness arise, increase and expand...
Agitation, Restlessness and Regret arise, increase and expand...
When one attends carelessly and irrationally then:
Doubt, confusion and uncertainty arise, increase and expand...
Furthermore the Awareness link to awakening does not arise!
The Investigation link to awakening does not arise!
The Energy link to awakening does not arise!
The Joy link to awakening does not arise!
The Tranquillity link to awakening does not arise!
The Concentration link to awakening does not arise!
The Equanimity link to awakening does not arise!
And if these qualities are present in mind, then they instantly cease, when
one attends carelessly, neglectful, absent-minded, sloppy and irrationally...
However if one attends carefully and rationally, the 5 mental hindrances
do not arise and if already arisen, then they gradually fade out and cease!
Secondly, any of the 7 mental links to awakening, that has not yet arisen,
arise and is gradually completed by mental development by this repeated
reflection and meditation...

Mutual Joy cures all vicious Envy and Jealousy!

jumping-for-joy-6.jpg

The dear companion can be the proximate cause for Mutual Joy, where one
rejoices in another being's success... One thus rejoicing in others fortune
is called a 'boon companion', for he is constantly glad: He laughs first and
speaks afterward! So he should be the first to be pervaded with gladness.
Or on seeing a dear person being happy, cheerful and glad, mutual joy can
be aroused thus: 'See this being is indeed glad! How good, how excellent!'
Just as one would be glad at seeing a dear and beloved person very happy,
exactly so does one pervade all other beings in all directions with mutual joy...
Rejoicing mutual joy can also be aroused by remembering others happiness
in the past and recollecting the elated joy aspect in this way: 'In the past he
had great wealth, a great following and he was always glad'. Or mutual joy
can be aroused by apprehending the future glad aspect of his in this way:
'In the future he will again enjoy similar success and will go about in gold
palanquins, on the backs of elephants or on horseback'. Having thus aroused
mutual joy regarding a dear person, one can then direct the very same feeling
successively towards a neutral one, and gradually towards any hostile person.
Vbh 274, Vism I 316

Comments:
Mutual joy causes Contentment! No mutual joy thus means Discontentment!
Therefore: If being generally dissatisfied, then be happy over other's success.
Secondly: Mutual joy causes all envy & jealousy to evaporate into equanimity!

Having Right View induces Seeing The Truth!

Right_View_dawns_the_4_Noble_Truths.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once said this:
Bhikkhus, dawn is the forerunner and precursor for the arising of the sun...
Similarly, is  Right View the forerunner and precursor for breaking through
to the Four Noble Truths as the really are. One can expect that any Bhikkhu
with Right View will understand as it really is:
Suffering is an in all phenomena immanent misery!
Craving and Clinging is the sole Cause of all Suffering!
Stilling and Ceasing of Craving is the End of all Suffering!
This Noble 8-fold Way is the sole method to Ending all Suffering!
Therefore, Bhikkhus, an effort should be dedicated to really understand:
All this is Suffering! An effort should be made much of to truly comprehend:
Craving is the Cause of Suffering! An effort should be aroused to realize:
No Craving is the End of Suffering! Effort should be made to set in motion,
to reinforce, & to refine: This Noble 8-fold Way which Ceases all Suffering...

Direct Experience of Development of the Noble 8-fold Way:

escape.print.b.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once said:
What, friends, should be fully understood by direct experience?
The Five Clusters of Clinging. What five?
The cluster of clinging to form...
The cluster of clinging to feeling...
The cluster of clinging to perception...
The cluster of clinging to construction...
The cluster of clinging to consciousness...
These are the 5 things, which should be understood by direct experience!

What are the 2 things, which should be overcome & left by direct experience?
Ignorance and Craving for new Becoming... These are the 2 things, which should
be overcome, relinquished and left all behind by direct experience!

goldfish_escaping.jpg

And what are the 2 things, which should be realized by direct experience?
Complete Understanding and Absolute Freedom...
These are the two things, which should be realized by direct experience!

And what are the 2 things, which should be developed by direct experience?
Calm and Insight...
These are the two things, which should be developed by direct experience.

And how does a Bhikkhu indeed do so? Here, friends, the Bhikkhu develops:
Right View, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Motivation, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Speech, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Action, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Livelihood, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Effort, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Awareness, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
Right Concentration, based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, & culminating in release.
It is in this way that a Bhikkhu comes to fully understand all that, which should be
understood; comes to overcome, and leave behind all, which should be left behind;
comes to realize by direct experience all states that is realizable, & finally comes
to develop all the mental states, which should be developed…

How is Release by Equanimity Achieved?

equanimityblets.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once said:
And how, Bhikkhus, is release of mind by serene equanimity (Upekkha)
achieved? What does this liberation have as its destination, what is
its culmination, what is its sweet fruit, and what is the ultimate goal
of mental release by universally neutral & imperturbable equanimity?
Here, a Bhikkhu dwells pervading first the entire frontal quadrant,
with a mind imbued with infinite equanimity, so the second quadrant,
the 3rd quadrant, and the 4th quadrant. As above, so below, across,
and everywhere, & as to all beings also to himself, he dwells pervading
the entire universe with a mind saturated with unlimited equanimity,
immense, exalted, measureless, without hostility, without any enmity,
without any ill will! Thus prepared and expanded, he then develops:

1: The Awareness Link to Awakening joined with limitless equanimity.
2: The Investigation Link to Awakening fused with such equanimity.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening together with infinite equanimity.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening accompanied with absolute equanimity.
5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening linked with serene equanimity.
6: The Concentration Link to Awakening associated with equanimity.
7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening joined with endless equanimity.
Based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, and culminating in release.

equanimity.blue.balance.jpg

If he then wishes:
May I dwell experiencing the repulsive in any unrepulsive & tempting,
then he can dwell experiencing repulsiveness therein. If he wishes:
May I dwell experiencing the unrepulsive in any disgusting & repulsive,
then he dwells experiencing pleasing beauty in whatever disgusting!
If he wishes: May I dwell experiencing the repulsive in what is both
unrepulsive & repulsive, he dwells experiencing repulsive disgust in it.
If he wishes: May I dwell experiencing the unrepulsive in what is both
unrepulsive & repulsive, he experiences only unrepulsive beauty by it!
If he wishes: Avoiding both the repulsive and the unrepulsive, may I
dwell in equanimity, just aware and clearly comprehending, then he
dwells in equanimity, just aware and clearly comprehending! Or else,
completely transcending the realm of infinitude of consciousness,
only aware that there is nothing, he enters & dwells in the sphere of
the void, empty & vacuous nothingness.. I tell you Bhikkhus for a wise
Bhikkhu here, who has not yet penetrated to an even more superior
mental release, the mental release by imperturbable equanimity has
the subtle sphere of the nothingness as its final culmination!

Separate Topics are actually much better, don't you think so? Or is that now far away form equanimity, if I drop this account in this stream?

Something that should be added, since most celebrate the Uposatha of the Jains in this days, would be the danger of confusing well maintained ignorance or with path supporting kinds of equanimity. There are even six kinds of such:

"And what are the six kinds of household equanimity? The equanimity that arises when a foolish, deluded person — a run-of-the-mill, untaught person who has not conquered his limitations or the results of action [2] & who is blind to danger [3] — sees a form with the eye. Such equanimity does not go beyond the form, which is why it is called household equanimity. (Similarly with sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, & ideas.)

MN 137: Salayatana-vibhanga Sutta — An Analysis of the Six Sense-media

  2. A person who "has not conquered his limitations or the results of action": this passage seems related to the passage in AN 3.99, which defines a person of limited mind, prey to the results of past bad actions, as one who is "undeveloped in contemplating the body, undeveloped in virtue, undeveloped in concentration, and undeveloped in discernment; restricted, small-hearted, dwelling with suffering." As AN 3.99 points out, such a person suffers more intensely from the results of past unskillful actions than does one whose awareness is unrestricted. SN 42.8 recommends the practice of the four sublime attitudes as a way of developing an unrestricted awareness that weakens the results of past unskillful actions. 3. A person who is "blind to danger" is one who does not see the drawbacks of sensual pleasure or attachment to the body. For such a person, moments of equanimity are usually a dull spot in the midst of the quest for sensual pleasure. This is why such moments do not go beyond the sensory stimulus that generated them.

Nice land scape pictures by the way. Do they already use rice planting machines? Well then, I understand how they are able to build such great Buddha images. What a beautiful world today. So lovely.

Sorry if it looks a little off-topic. Just felt stimulated to bring this up. I should not imagine so many things.

How is one well equipped with the 5 Abilities?

A certain, not very well known Bhikkhu once asked Blessed Buddha:
Venerable Sir, it is said: One is well equipped with the 5 mental abilities!
In what way, Venerable Sir, is one well equipped with these five abilities?
The Blessed Buddha then pointed out:
When, Bhikkhu, a Bhikkhu thoroughly trains and fully develops:
The ability of Faith, which leads to stilling, which leads to enlightenment..
The ability of Energy, which leads to peace, which leads to awakening..
The ability of Awareness, which leads to harmony, which leads to safety..
The ability of Concentration, which leads to rest, which leads to ending..
The ability of Understanding, which leads to ease, which leads to bliss..
Then he becomes one, who is well equipped with the 5 mental abilities!

Disillusion Releases all Clinging and Attachment!

Lying.Buddha22.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once said:
What, Ananda, is the experience of Disappointment with this entire World?
Whatever there is in the mind of clinging to the world, craving for the world,
concern for the world, longing for the world, tendency & inclination towards
the world, adherence & devotion to the world, bias, all this a Bhikkhu leaves,
gives up, keeps away, above & aloof, by relinquishing & releasing detachment!
This itself is the very experience of Disappointment, Disillusion, Discontent,
Disenchantment, Dislike, Distress & Dissatisfaction with this entire World...

Mental Phenomena related with the Craving that causes Suffering:
There are four kinds of Clinging:
1: Clinging to Desire for Sensing.
2: Clinging to various Wrong Views.
3: Clinging to rituals and superstition.
4: Clinging to the concept of self, ego, I, me, identity, & the notion "I Am"!
All forms of clinging have to cease before any suffering is stilled...
Absence of Clinging is indeed Bliss!

Disillusion_Series.h.jpg

There are Seven Latent Tendencies (anusaya):
These drifting drives & lurking liabilities are often deeply hidden in the mind!

Simile:
The worldling resorts back to the world like a worm resorts back to its hole!
The Noble freed by disappointment leans, tends & inclines towards Nibbana!

The Reward is:
Approach to Nibbana by relinquishing all longing back to this or any world!

Friends:

Luminous is the Mind released by Friendliness!

luminous_mind.jpgRadiant_Mind.s.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once explained:
Whatever meritorious action one performs, all these together are not worth
1/16th part of a mind released into friendliness, since the mind released into
friendliness blazes forth, & outshines all with an unsurpassable brilliance...
Just as the radiance from all the stars and planets does not match even a
1/16th part of the radiance from the moon, which thus outshines all the stars,
similarly; whatever good thoughts one fulfils by doing meritorious actions,
all these together are not worth one-sixteenth fraction of the mind released
by infinite friendliness! Since a mind released into friendliness - all alone -
blazes forth, and thus outshines all these with an incomparable radiance...
Just as the mighty sun rising at autumn dawn, by making any fog evaporate,
scattering any dark thundercloud, makes the sky all blue & clear, so it alone
freely shines, blazes in a blue brilliance, - exactly so - whatever thoughts
there may be for gaining merit, all these together are not worth one 16th
fraction, of a mind released into friendliness! Since the mind released into
friendliness - all alone - outshines all these with inestimable luminosity!
So did the Lord Buddha state this matter, and he further added:
For the Noble friend, who by will, who fully aware and deliberately brings
infinite, boundless and endless friendliness into being, this mountain-like
limitless goodwill makes all evil substrate evaporate, & the chains of mind,
these mental fetters become thin, slender and slack. If a friend without
ill will cares for even one single living being, such friend, through that,
becomes quite skilled and clever, so far more for the Noble Friend, who
by possessing a caring heart for all sentient beings, without even a single
exception, accumulates great, massive, and immense amounts of merit!
Those gurus and priests who sacrifice life, objects, or fire, who bathe
ceremoniously, devoted to mere forms and empty ritual, blindly attached
to and obsessed by culture, tradition of primeval & often unknown origin,
do never experience even a 16th of this release of mind by friendliness
fully brought into being, just like the vagueness of even all the stars cannot
either ever outshine the moon! Since there cannot exist any evil animosity
whatsoever, nor enmity at all, neither even an atomic trace of hate in a
Nobly Released One, who by caring indiscriminately and infinitely for all
living beings, who by possessing such treasure of a mind relinquished by
friendliness, simply cannot ever suppress, dominate, harm, or kill even the
smallest sentient breathing being! Luminous is such perfectly released mind!

The Blessed Buddha once explained:
Whatever meritorious action one performs, all these together are not worth
1/16th part of a mind released ...

I wonder where the source of the text is coming from. In the quoted source I find different informations, but maybe it is found different in the Dhammabook for sell.

If we take Ven. Thanissaros translation, it look like that:

This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: "All the grounds for making merit leading to spontaneously arising (in heaven) do not equal one-sixteenth of the awareness-release through good will. Good will — surpassing them — shines, blazes, & dazzles.

"Just as the radiance of all the stars does not equal one-sixteenth of the radiance of the moon, as the moon — surpassing them — shines, blazes, & dazzles, even so, all the grounds for making merit leading to spontaneously arising in heaven do not equal one-sixteenth of the awareness-release through good will. Good will — surpassing them — shines, blazes, & dazzles.

"Just as in the last month of the rains, in autumn, when the sky is clear & cloudless, the sun, on ascending the sky, overpowers the space immersed in darkness, shines, blazes, & dazzles, even so, all the grounds for making merit leading to spontaneously arising in heaven do not equal one-sixteenth of the awareness-release through good will. Good will — surpassing them — shines, blazes, & dazzles.

"Just as in the pre-dawn darkness the morning star shines, blazes, & dazzles, even so, all the grounds for making merit leading to spontaneously arising in heaven do not equal one-sixteenth of the awareness-release through good will. Good will — surpassing them — shines, blazes, & dazzles."

When one develops — mindful — good will without limit, fetters are worn through, on seeing the ending of acquisitions. If with uncorrupted mind you feel good will for even one being, you become skilled from that. But a Noble One produces a mind of sympathy for all beings, an abundance of merit. Kingly seers, who conquered the earth swarming with beings, went about making sacrifices: the horse sacrifice, human sacrifice, water rites, soma rites, & the "Unobstructed," but these don't equal one sixteenth of a well-developed mind of good will — as all the constellations don't, one sixteenth of the radiance of the moon. One who neither kills nor gets others to kill, neither conquers, nor gets others to conquer, with good will for all beings, has no hostility with anyone at all.

If we take Ireland's translation, it looks like that:

This was said by the Lord...

"Bhikkhus, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness. The mind-release of loving-kindness surpasses them and shines forth, bright and brilliant.

"Just as the radiance of all the stars does not equal a sixteenth part of the moon's radiance, but the moon's radiance surpasses them and shines forth, bright and brilliant, even so, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness...

"Just as in the last month of the rainy season, in the autumn, when the sky is clear and free of clouds, the sun, on ascending, dispels the darkness of space and shines forth, bright and brilliant, even so, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness...

"And just as in the night, at the moment of dawn, the morning star shines forth, bright and brilliant, even so, whatever grounds there are for making merit productive of a future birth, all these do not equal a sixteenth part of the mind-release of loving-kindness. The mind-release of loving-kindness surpasses them and shines forth, bright and brilliant."

For one who mindfully develops Boundless loving-kindness Seeing the destruction of clinging, The fetters are worn away. If with an uncorrupted mind He pervades just one being With loving kindly thoughts, He makes some merit thereby. But a noble one produces An abundance of merit By having a compassionate mind Towards all living beings. Those royal seers who conquered The earth crowded with beings Went about performing sacrifices: The horse sacrifice, the man sacrifice, The water rites, the soma sacrifice, And that called "the Unobstructed." But these do not share even a sixteenth part Of a well cultivated mind of love, Just as the entire starry host Is dimmed by the moon's radiance. One who does not kill Nor cause others to kill, Who does not conquer Nor cause others to conquer, Kindly towards all beings — He has enmity for none.

This too is the meaning of what was said by the Lord, so I heard.

Neither I see any glorification of Mind nor do I gain any idea that it might be even connected with brain.

There is not a single farmer in SEA, who would regard ceto as a brain stuff. Not to speak about wise people.

Luminous is such perfectly released mind! does not appear, or I am not very attentive.

What is Wrong? The Mind or the World?

mind.universe.jpg

Is the world wrong? No the world is just as it is: Always a changing misery!
Are all the other people wrong? No there is just greed, hate and ignorance...
Is the society wrong? No, the kammic cause and effect is perfectly just & fair!
Is you yourself wrong? No, since there are just passing mental & material states...

What then is Wrong?
The aversive mind  opposing and rejecting some reals, while accepting others is wrong!
This stubbornly defying mind defends a rigid stand & fight against any present reality...
Why is this resisting combat mind wrong? Because however much it clashes with both
the internal and external faults, it cannot ever cure them... Rather they grow stronger!
Opposition simply does not help anything at all! Rather it aggravates the problems...

What then is the specific cure for such opposing, antagonistic, bothered & irritated mind?
Daily Meditation on Universal Friendliness softens up this tense & exasperated mind:
Cultivation of Boundless Pity equips the mind with tolerance, patience & forbearance:
Rejoicing in Mutual Joy elevates, exalts, and satisfies this frustrated & irked mind:
Remaining unperturbed in well ballanced Equanimity enables first stability, then peace:

Why do all the Buddhas always smile?
Bayon.jpg
They simply accept it all, just as it really is!

Opposition Doesn't Help!

Accepting it as it really just is!!

The First Buddhist Council took place at the Sattapanni Rock Cave in:
Rajagaha now Rajgir, India. 3 months after the Buddha's final Nibbana,
500 Arahants met here to recite the Dhamma and the Vinaya, so that it
could be passed on to future generations exactly as spoken by the historical
Buddha Gotama and his disciples. This council was headed by Mahakassapa
Thera and it lasted 7 months. It established the original authentic Tipitaka:
The 3 Baskets of Sacred Text = The Pali Canon:

This crucial 1st council is described in detail in the:
Mahavamsa: The Great Chronicle of Ceylon pp: 14-19

How to be Real  Buddhist through Observance?
Unduwap Poya is this Fullmoon of December celebrating 2 events:
1: The arrival of Arahat Nun Theri Sanghamitta, sister of Arahat Mahinda, daughter
of emperor Asoka from India in the 3rd century B.C. establishing the Order of Nuns.
2: The arrival at Anuradhapura of a sapling of the sacred Bodhi-tree at Buddhagaya,
brought to Sri Lanka by Arahat Theri Sanghamitta.

Sanghamitta.brings.Bodhi.Tree.jpg
Arahat Theri Sanghamitta arrives w. tree.

This day is designated Sanghamitta Day. Nowadays Dasasil Matas;
ten-precept nuns, take an active part in making these celebrations.

On such Full-Moon Uposatha Poya Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges & undertakes the
Five Precepts like this: Newly bathed, shaved, white-clothed, with
clean bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue, and
bows first three times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees & head
touch the floor. Then, with joined palms at the heart, one recites
these memorized lines in a loud, calm & steady voice:

As long as this life lasts:
I hereby take refuge in the Buddha.
I hereby take refuge in the Dhamma.
I hereby take refuge in the Sangha.
I hereby seek shelter in the Buddha for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Dhamma for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Sangha for the 2nd time.
I hereby request protection from the Buddha for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Dhamma for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Sangha for the 3rd time.
I will hereby respect these Three Jewels the rest of my life!

I accept to respect & undertake these 5 training rules:
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Killing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Stealing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Sexual Abuse.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Dishonesty.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Alcohol & Drugs.
As long as this life lasts, I am thus protected by these 5 precepts...

Then, one keeps and protects these sacred vows better than one's
own eyes & children!, since they protect you & all other beings much
better than any army! They are the highest offer one can give in/to
this world! So is the start towards Nibbana: the Deathless Element!
This is the Noble Way to Peace, to Freedom, to Ease, to Happiness,
initiated by Morality, developed further by Dhamma-Study and
fulfilled by training of Meditation...

Today indeed is Pooya or Uposatha / observance day, where any lay
Buddhist normally keeps even the Eight Precepts from sunrise until
the next dawn... If any wish a recognition by the Bhikkhu-Sangha,
they may simply forward the lines starting with "I hereby ..." signed
with name, date, town & country to me or join here.  A public list of
this new quite rapidly growing global Saddhamma-Sangha is set up
here!

The Modern Community of Buddha's Disciples: Saddhamma Sangha:
Can quite advantageously be Joined Here:

May your journey hereby be light, swift and sweet. Never give up !!

The Fading Away of Greed is induced by Disillusion!

lying.Buddha.water.jpg

The Blessed Buddha once said:
What, Ananda, is the experience of fading away of greed through disillusion?
When a Bhikkhu retires to the forest, to the root of a tree, or an empty hut
and thinks thus: This is Peace, this is sublime, namely, the stilling of all mental
construction, the ending of all kammic formation, the evaporation of all fuel
of becoming, the ceasing of all craving, the relinquishing of all by detachment,
Nibbana... Then this very reflection itself is the experience of fading away...

Some Simple Comments:
Fading Away/Disillusion means comprehending all as impermanence, pain & no-self!
Ceasing means complete fading away into absence of all greed, hate and ignorance!
Fading away of greed by disillusion is the proximate cause of all mental release...
This reflection on fading away of greed by disillusion, leads to final knowledge...
The fading away of greed & lust by disillusion is one of the 18 Principal Insights...

Fading_Away.jpg

Simile:
Greed, lust, & desire fades away slowly like the colours of cloth hanging in the sun!

What are the 4 Fuels of re-becoming into renewed existence?
1: Sense-desire is one kind of fuel upon which the fire of existence burns.
2: The 5 Clusters of Clinging is another fuel upon which the fire of existence burns.
3: The Mental Defilements are also fuels upon which the fire of existence burns.
4: Formation of Kamma by Intention is a fuel upon which the fire of existence burns.

The ultimate reward is:
Approach to Nibbana by making that deathless dimension the prime object!
